Captain's Trunk

Captain's Trunk

(29H X 28D X 42L)

The Captains Trunk was made for a previous Captain of mine. It was a complete surprise to him and was comissioned by his Command Staff Officer as a gift from the Ward Room. The sight glass was a gift from the Chief's Mess.

The shadow box was the only knowledge the Captain had of this presentation. He dedicated it to his father and uncle. The Purple Heart is one of three earned by his uncle. The medal to the right of the Purple Heart is the Bronze Medal of Honor and was awarded to his father from the Netherlands. The memorial flag is his father's and the flag to the right is the Dutch flag, his father's mother country. Both men were true inspirations to him and an important part of his life.

The Carvings represent some of his major accomplishments from 31 years of Naval service. The Captain's Insignia for the highest rank achieved, the Surface Warfare Officer insignia (SWO) one of the hardest and most important qualifications for an Officer of the Line, the Command at Sea and the Command at Shore Breast Insignia (indicating just that).

I hold this Captain in high regard as well as many others do who have served under him. Hopefully this trunk will show this appreciation to his legacy. I was truly honored to make it. This piece will inspire conversation in any crowd and is a fitting gift to a dedicated Sailor, friend and shipmate.
